Homework due Friday, 25th May 2018

We have been learning about stories of mystery and suspense in Literacy and have thought about what we could include to make them exciting! Use the pictures below or your own imagination to write the introduction to a mystery story, using between 50 and 100 words. Think about setting the scene, describing what you could hear and showing how you felt.

Perhaps you could include:

§     Some short, punchy sentences to build up tension
§     Ellipsis (…) to create the ‘what happens next?’ moment
§     Description of a spooky setting
§     SHOW how the character felt (He shrieked! Sweat poured from her face.)
§     Similes (My heart pounded like a drum)
§     Rhetorical questions (What could it be?)
§     Description mystery noises and sounds.

TIME CONJUNCTIONS
When, after, before, until, since, while, once, as and as soon as are conjunctions which can be used to connect an action or an event to a point in time. Conjunctions must be followed by an action done by someone, or something. If you take the conjunction out, the sentence would not make sense!
Task
Complete the following sentences by putting a time conjunction into them. Make sure they make sense! Then write five of your own sentences using time conjunctions.

She was a lot smaller  _________      she was young.
We must be quiet    ______   everyone has gone to bed.
Put your pyjamas on     ________________   you go to bed!
I’ll wait with you    ___________________ the train comes.
I’ve been very busy   ____________    I started my new job.

Persuasive Letter

Our local and global community have a plastic problem. We want you to do something about it! Have a look at the facts below:
1)      10 million metric tonnes of plastic waste end up in our seas and oceans each year. This is the same weight as about 2 million elephants- imagine that!
2)      Plastic takes thousands of years to decompose and rot away!
3)      There is an enormous pile of plastic waste floating in the Pacific Ocean which is now larger than France!
4)      It is predicted that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish.
5)      Some of our sealife is dying due to the fact that these vulnerable creatures are eating the plastic which poisions them.
6)      Hounslow Borough Council do not collect recycling from schools!
Task:  We are asking all children at Chatsworth to work together as a community to write a letter to Hounslow Borough Council to PERSUADE them to start collecting recycling from schools in the borough. Your letter should give at least three reasons why they should collect recycling from schools. You may decide to write a paragraph for each reason. Try to include persuasive sentence starters (Surely you agree that…..Everybody knows that….I strongly believe that….) and rhetorical questions (How would you feel if…? Don’t you know that….?) Please write your letter on PAPER.
You do not need to include any addresses on your letter as we will send a covering letter as a school. You could set out the letter as below:

Blogging homework due Friday, 16th March

Homework due Friday, 16th March 2018

We have been looking at ways to show how a character is feeling by using a range of vocabulary to imply (hint at) their feelings without explicitly saying the adjective.

For example,

The boy was feeling sad.

The boy’s lip trembled as tears dripped down his cheek.

How do you think these characters are feeling?

Try to use SHOW not tell sentences to imply how the person is feeling. Think about their facial expression, body language, what they may say and how they may say it.
Can you think of at least 5 different sentences to show how each character is feeling?

Homework due Friday, 2nd March

Homework due Friday, 2nd March 2018
As part of our Art Week, we have been using technology to create digital media.

First, we used the Kindles to take photos and add filters.
We then used the program, Paint, to add colour and effects to our photographs.

After experimenting with oil pastels and pencils, we also combined our digital work with drawing to create a final piece.

Can you research a digital media artist (for example,David Hockney, Evgeny Parfenov, Bram Vanhaeren) and create your own art work in this style. You can use images from magazines, photos, etc that you cut out or you could use a computer program to design your own work.

Please write a paragraph to explain what you did and why.
