Blogging homework due Friday, 27th January

As part of our Geography unit, we are going to be finding out whereabouts in the world different products are grown and produced. When you eat a banana or a piece of chocolate, have you ever wondered where it was grown and what kind of journey it has been on in order to get to our homes?

Part One:

Your task is to find out in which countries (and their continent) could the following products have been grown:

-coffee
-tea
-bananas
-sugar
-cotton
-chocolate (cocoa beans)

Part Two:

What can you find out about fair trade? Use your research skills to find out about fair trade and write a paragraph about it. You may find this website helpful: http://www.funkidslive.com/learn/environment/f-is-for-fairtrade/ ALWAYS ASK A PARENT'S PERMISSION BEFORE USING THE INTERNET.

    Task 2:

    Fair Trade:

Fair trade is a worldwide movement that aims to help farmers and producers in less economically developed countries. The term Fair trade means that they receive a fair price for the goods that they produce and have better working conditions. Goods that are produced and sold in support of these aims usually carry a “fair-trade label.” Normally, a very big amount of money you pay for anything goes to the people who bought the product from the actual maker. This happens a lot when imported from poor countries. Also, when a person buys anything from the maker of the product, the price would be extremely low from the price that would be seen in a shop. Did you know? The first fair trade product was a green and black’s Maya gold chocolate bar. Intriguingly, divine chocolate is the only chocolate company in the world to be fully owned by farmers. A third of all bananas sold in the UK have the fair-trade mark. Fair trade has encouraged many farmers to farm in a more environmentally-friendly way, using fewer chemicals and effective irrigation.

It is a way of buying and selling products that allows the farmers to be paid a fair price for their produce, and have better working conditions. ... The Fair trade Mark was introduced in 1994; it is a symbol awarded to products that are sold under certain fair-trading conditions.

Fair Trade introduces security in terms of minimum price, so that it is fair to everyone. If the market value increases, then the farmers will get above the minimum price.

Before Fair Trade, there was no security in terms of price of the goods. Fair trade brings in minimum price guarantee to the farmers for their goods. It also enables them to get more money if the market value increases, so that it is fair for every one.

    This is good because;
    1. It allows the farmers to plan ahead.
    2. They can have better housing facilities.
    3. They can have better education and send their kids to schools or universities.
    4. They can have clean water and electricity.

Fair trade is when people buy things and the people have enough money to buy more things and the shop keepers have enough money to pay all of the people that made the food. If not, the people will not have enough money to buy more things and the shopkeepers will not have enough money to pay all of the people that made the food.

  16. Part One:
Your task is to find out in which countries (and their continent) could the following products have been grown:

    -coffee

Legend has it that the energising effect of the coffee bean was first recognized by a 9th-century goatherd in the Kaffa province of Ethiopia, where the coffee tree originated. Coffee was almost certainly cultivated in Yemen. The drink was spread by Muslim pilgrims and traders across North Africa and the Middle East, where Arabian coffeehouses became centres of political activity. The Dutch planted coffee in Sri Lanka, India and Java in the late 1600s and later in South America. Within a few years Dutch colonies became the main suppliers of coffee to Europe. The first UK coffee house was opened in Oxford in 1650, followed two years later by one in London.
The US is the biggest importer, followed by Germany and Italy while the UK is the 8th largest importer accounting for 3.6% of world coffee.
60% of the world's coffee is produced by only four countries:Brazil,Vietnam, Columbia and Indonesia.

    -tea

Tea has grown from a medicinal crop in China five thousand years ago to a multibillion pound global industry which millions of people around the world depend on for their livelihood .
India, Kenya and Sri Lanka are other growers.

    -bananas

1 on 4 bananas is Fairtrade. Bananas are thought to have originated in the jungles of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines in Southeast Asia where many varieties of wild banana still grow. They were spread across Asia by travellers and brought to Africa by Arabs where they were given their present name, derived from the Arabic for finger.
For farmers and workers in countries like Colombia and the Dominican Republic, growing bananas for a living is becoming unsustainable.
The banana industry provides employment for thousands of people in Latin America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and West Africa.

    -sugar

Around 80 per cent of the world’s sugar is derived from sugar cane, grown by millions of small-scale farmers and plantation workers in developing countries.
For example, sugar accounts for 70 per cent of the value of Cuba’s exports and 40 per cent of exports from Belize.

Exporting cane sugar is particularly difficult for many African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries as markets in the EU and US are protected in favour of their own sugar beet growers and cane plantations.
Sugar sold in UK comes from Belize, Fiji, Malawi,Monanbique. The last two are extremely poor countries.

    -cotton

Buying clothes made with Fairtrade cotton means we can be a follow fashion and at the same time help low paid cotton farmers around the world.
Farmers in places like India, Kyrgyzstan and West Africa are struggling to survive.

Buying products made from Fairtrade Cotton ensures that the farmers receive a fair and stable price for their cotton.

    -chocolate (cocoa beans)

Cocoa trees are farmed in places like Ivory Coast and Ghana.Ivory Coast produces 40% of the global supply.
Cocoa trees grow in tropical environments which is hot and rainy.
Primary growing regions are Africa, Asia and Latin America.
UK's chocolate comes from Kuapa Kokko Co-operative of Africa s Ghanaian farmers.

    Part Two:
What can you find out about fair trade?

With Fairtrade you have the power to change the world every day. With simple shopping choices you can get farmers a better deal. And that means they can make their own decisions, control their futures and lead the dignified life everyone deserves. It is about supporting farmers and workers to improve their lives, decent working conditions and better prices.
Fairtrade is a partnership between those who grow our food and those who consume it.

Countries of lesser wealth benefit mostly from fair trade as it helps to develop their economy. The product sold through fair trade often times help workers to be able to afford food shelter and education.
