Literacy Homework

Next week we will be writing a letter to Big Ben at the Houses of Parliament to ask if we are allowed to go and visit! Therefore your task this week is to do some research into Big Ben and come up with five pieces of information or questions that you might want to include in your letter. Please do not write the letter. We will be doing this in class.

We will be using this information in lessons so you may find it easier to do this work on paper. This means you can have it with you at your desk while you are writing. Please ask for paper if you need it.

  6. Big Ben has several birthdays. It was cast on the 10th of April 1858 and that was its first birthday.

The great clock started working on the 31st of May 1859. This is the second bell and it also has a crack and was tilted at an angle so the hammer knocks on a different part of the bell.

If the clock is too quick then someone will put a coin in to make it slow down a bit and if it is too slow they will take coins out.

The Big Ben is 2.28 metres tall.

After the great fire of London struck the houses of Parliament they rebuilt it and thought of making a ginormous clock tower and the bell was called the Big Ben.

The official name of the clock is the Westminster clock.
