Half Term Homework, due Friday 4th November

After the holidays, we will be learning about the home life of the Ancient Greeks: what they wore, what they ate, what their homes were like, the kind of jobs they did and the religion that they practised.

To get you started, we would like you to find out about the Ancient Greeks gods and goddesses. A good website to start you off can be found here: http://www.historyforkids.net/ancient-greek-gods.html

The gods and goddesses were believed to be responsible for different aspects of Ancient Greek life. Can you find one that has a link to your life, hobbies and interests? For example, if you like swimming, water sports or lazing on a beautiful beach, then you might like Poseidon, the God of the Sea.

Your task is to choose your favourite god or goddess and write them a letter telling them what you like about them and describing their best qualities and powers. You could try to use some exciting adjectives and sensational similes. It might be a good idea to ask them some interesting questions too!

I can't wait to see what you find out!

Have a lovely break. I'm looking forward to seeing you back at school soon.

  6. I hope you are all having a lovely half term. Thank you for posting your research. Please do remember that the task is to WRITE A LETTER to the Ancient Greek god or goddess that you have chosen. This will show that you have researched the god or goddess and can use your letter writing skills to write about them in your own words.

  7. Zues is my favourite greek god, he is more powerful than the other greek gods and has a number of powers. His most famous power is to throw a lightning bolt, his winged horse called Pegasus carried the bolts and Zues trained an eagle to recieve them. He can also control the weather causing rain and storms. Zues also had other powers. He can mimic to sound like anyone and he can shape shift into animals and humans. If people made him angry, he would sometimes turn them into an animal as a punishment. Zues has several brothers and sisters witch are also gods and goddesses. he was the youngest, but the most powerful of the three brothers. One brother was called Hades and he ruled the underworld, the other one was called Poseiden and he ruled the sea. He had three sisters including Hestia, Demeteter and Hera (who he married).

  8. Dear Zeus,
I know you are the greatest among the three gods Hades and Poseidon. You ruled the sky and the earth. You control the weather causing wind and rain. You also cause thunder and lightning by throwing your thunderbolt like a spear. This made you the most powerful god. I heard that you live in Olympus above the clouds. Is it true?

You reminded that gods are not perfect. Still most gods and mortals respected you. I respect you for giving us laws and justice also teaching us kindness and good manner. Like you I would love to travel across the world. I respect the fact that you were very kind to Baucis and Philemon even though they were poor, they helped to travellers like you. As a reward you turned their house into a beautiful temple.

I read that a scientist named Benjamin Franklin helped to solve the mystery of lighting and thunder in 1700. That's why he is called as"The Man Who Tamed the Lighting". Do you know that Zeus?

  9. Dear Aphrodite,

I extremely cherish you, as you are an admirer of Mother Nature and so am I. you had an unusual birth. You inaugurated out of sea foam, elegant and fully grown-up. You are the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. You are also a protector of sailors. You adore dainty doves, sassy sparrows, and sanguine swans. I am also fond of bonny birds just like you. Like all the Greek Olympic gods, you are immortal and very powerful. Your special powers are those of love and desire. You had a belt that had the power to cause others to fall in love with the wearer. Some of the other Greek goddesses, such as Hera, would borrow the belt from time to time. You also had the ability to cause fighting couples to fall in love again.

When it was time for your marriage, because many of the gods were in endearment with you, Zeus was afraid that a great battle would break out over you. Zeus eventually arranged a marriage between you and the god Hephaestus. In some ways this was funny to the Greeks as Hephaestus was a puny and grotesque god.

Your Roman name is Venus and you are the goddess of love and beauty. Your father Zeus is the captain of Gods and his Roman name is Jupiter.

You are the symbol for feminine beauty. You are always depicted as a glamorous young woman, wearing very elegantly draped clothing and jewellery.

You typically eat three meals a day. Breakfast is a light and simple meal that usually consisted of bread or porridge. Lunch is also a light meal where you would again have some bread, but would also have some cheese or figs. The big meal of the day is dinner, which is eaten around sundown. Dinner would sometimes be a long social event with a variety of foods including vegetables, bread, eggs, fish, and cheese. I also have three meals a day, but instead of a light breakfast, a simple meal and a heavy dinner, I have a heavy breakfast, a good lunch and a simple dinner. Having said that, I also have tea sometime before dinner.

I heard that rich Greeks have slaves - sometimes 50 slaves worked for a rich family. Did you have 50 slaves working for you? I heard that slaves did the hard work, on the farm, in the fields and workshops and in the house too. I would love to know if this is true!

You are the daughter of the mighty Zeus, who is the ruler of the Gods. It is believed that twelve most important gods and goddesses lived at the top of Mount Olympus. How is it like to live at Mount Olympus, the home of gods?

Aphrodite, I adore you for your elegance and immense beauty. Your abundance love of nature is inspirational.

I would be grateful if you could reply.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Fareeha

  11. Dear Poseidon lord of the sea,
I have learned some amazing facts about you and I want you to know that I love playing in the water that is why I think we are linked. We are both water signs. You are my favorite Greek god.
You are so lucky to have two very important in the god world,Zeus and Hades.Zeus is the king of all gods.Hades runs the Underworld.Aren't you jealous of your brothers or their powers?Maybe you didn't want to be in charge of the Underworkd, the world of the dead. And certainly did not all the responsibility that Zeus had of ruling over the Earth.
I hope you are very happy being the Lord of the Sea.I think the job is pertfect for you. With so much power you have I can imagine why you are so moody and restless. It is so awsome how you could magically make an island appear,or a tidal wave cover the shore,or send a wave to suck you right off the beach. All it takes is the wave of your hand!
I would be terrified to live by the sea side. That's why people built temples to honour you and brought gifts every day,so the water would be calm and sparkling.Sometimes the gifts did not make you happy and a terrible storm would breack over the land.People tried very hard all the time to make you happy, isn't it?
Your huge palace on Mount Olympus is together with the other twelve Gods.Like you,I much prefer the palace under the sea.I imagine it is a beautiful place.I read it has tall columns and colorful seaweed and white sand, glowing jewels and shimmering shells, magical amber with fish swimming in and out in every color of the rainbow.I'm sure there is nothing else like it in the world. At night glow worms keeps every corner bathed in soft light. It is a peaceful colorful place. As moody and wild as you might be,I think this place always calmed you when you came home.
I read about the contest between you and Athena goddess of reason to be the god to watch over a town.I really like the story, both gods gave gifts to the people.Poseidon gave a stream
with salted water and Athena an ollive tree.People liked both
gifts but the water was salted in conparison with the olives which were delicious.Poseidon niece Athena was the winner! :-) The small village gainged a most powerful and wise guardian, the goddess Athena. In her honor they named the village Athens, the capital city of Greece.
Soon we have Halloween,do you celebrate it?
I can imagine you are wearing Hawaian shirt, shorts, flip flops and a three pointed trident.I'm so sure you are walking the beaches and stopping fishermen or tacking pictures with tourists. Please be in good mood and dont stir up a tsuami or a Hurricane.I know you are a god and you have a mighti power BUT PLEASE CONTROL YOURSELF!!! It's so fantastic when you create cool stuff like horses out of sea foam.
My mom and dad told me that in Romania we have a beach resort named as your Roman name Neptun.Next time when I'm going to the beach in my country I will think of you.
I look forward reading from you.
    Yours faithfully,
    Cezar

    Dear Zeus,

My name is Fabian. I go to Chatsworth Primary School and we are going to be learning about various Greek gods. I read very interesting facts about you. Now I know that you are the god of the sky and lightning and your symbol is a thunderbolt. You are the most power full god of all Greek gods. It must be amazing to have this power. Your huge power can change the weather when ever you want. You can make big yellow lightning on the sky and suddenly change it to bright sun. I'm curious who gave you this power control the weather. I don't understand why you are not a good husband to Hera and not a good father to your children. I really would like to see you one day and speak to with you about your travelling in disguise and see how you change the weather.

    Yours sincerely

You are my favourite Greek God. I think you are truly amazing, awesome and epic. I think you are the God of the sea. I love your Trident. Is it scary that your trident starts earthquakes? I like your long blue beard. I have one brother called Ishaan but you have two brothers whose names are Zeus and Hades. Hades scares me. Your parents are called Cronus and Rhea. Did you enjoy riding a chariot once or twice or every single day? You are also the God of the horses. I like ponies. I know that you fell in love with a princess called Clito. Was Atlantis a huge island? I know that you can control the sea. I really like swimming. Do you? I know that Atlantis became the greatest civilization in the world, But how many people live there?

  18. Dear Hestia,
I really like that you don’t like noisy people gossiping and shouting. I also agree that it sometimes gets a bit loud. The best bits about you are that if a good god or amazing goddess does the wrong job you will make sure they do the right job.
It’s really nice of you to care about other polite people because you always think about them and are helpful to other gods and goddesses like an awesome class monitor. It’s very helpful when you solve problems and make people realise that family is important to others in the world.
I was just wondering why you didn’t want a husband? Did you not want a fabulous family? Why don’t you have any incredible powers?

I like you because you control all of the gods and your brothers [Hades and Poseidon] are in charge of the universe. Is it true that Hades ruled the underworld? Is it true that you gave laws and justice to mortals and strangers? But i really like you because you control the sky and earth. I really like traveling, do you like traveling.

I really like that you are a wise god, but at the same time you are foolish and cruel. I heard that you wasn't a good husband to Hera and you wasn't a good father for your daughters. I'm wondering how this can happen but beside all that you still my favourite god.
In the other hand, you teached mortals kindness and good manners. You gave them laws and justice.
I liked what you did with Baucis and Philemon, and when you turned their poor house into beautiful temple.
I wonder where you live today and where is your home?

  23. Dear Zeus,

I like how you can hold lightning bolts. Is your winged horse really called Pegasus and how did you get an eagle to retrieve a lightning bolt? How did you become the strongest of the gods? I like how your lightning looks like and I don't care if your the strongest of the gods but what I like most is your lightning bolts and there colour. How did Pegasus hold your lightning bolt? Can your lightning be in different colours or does it just stay the colour blue or yellow?
The one thing I can not believe is that you can mimic and you can shape shift. There is one thing that I want to tell you and that is you are my favourite god but it is not because you are the strongest of the gods, it is because I like your lightning bolts and there colour. I am seven years old. how old are you? In addition to my earlier point I think Pegasus is amazing but I am still wondering how an eagle can retrieve a lightning bolt.
