The Clock Tower was designed by Charles Barry along with the Palace of Westminster. The tower was completed in 1859. The clock tower is 96 meters tall.
ReplyDeleteBig Ben is the large bell inside the clock tower. It is used for telling the time by making Ding Dong sound.
The Big Ben bell was made in 1856 and it weighed 16 tons. But the bell broke when the tested it. So they made a new bell in 1858 wich weighed 13 and half tons.
The Clock Tower has around 300 steps to climb at the top. In the olden days they use to light the tower using gas lights and someone had to stay awake till morning to keep them ON.
The Clock Tower was named Elizabeth Tower in the year 2012 to celebrate the 60th year of being the Queen.
The old Palace of Westminster was burned down by fire in the year 1834. So they built a new Palace along with the clock tower in 1840.
